Shift

Shift is the horizontal version of Rise and Fall. We are essentially sliding the front or rear standard sideways

It can be achieved in a number of ways:

1 By using the shift movement on either front or rear standard or both in opposite directions.

2 By swinging the front and rear standards by the same angle thereby keeping them parallel.

This movement is used, for example,  to photograph a mirror as it is neccesary to photograph the object from one side rather than directly in front. Another possible use of shift is where there is an obstruction of unsightly object in the way of the subject. For example a car in front of a building may prevent a direct frontal view. In order to photograph the building may require a compbination of rise and shift movements.

METHOD Front and rear standards are swung in the same direction to the same degree, giving the same effect as Shift, but with dramatically increased control.

Monorails and some field camera have shift movements on the front and rear standards making this adjustment very easy.
